Driving through the rain forest
The trek from San Jose to Arenal is about 200km (140 miles) through the rain forest. It’s a winding journey that takes almost 4 hours, with official directions from the Tabacon Resort listing things like “turn right at the small hospital, then go 30m and turn left.” Needless to say we made it there without getting lost, thanks to our ever alert driver Flash and his trusty navigator Mel. We wound through what’s known as “Cloud Forest” areas, they can be described as jungle that’s really really foggy. We drove through many small one road towns checking out the locals, Randy noticed that every house had their front door wide open, I guess they like the breeze and trust their neighbors! Vicki began to feel a little “queasy” so she took over the navigator duties. In the last 40km of the trip we were stopped three times by road construction, so we got out and made some friends with the other travelers, all of whom had larger cars than our box! Finally we arrived at Tabacon…
