Yes, you will love it. October is the tail end of rainy season. So the closer you can get to November the better off.

Have an amazing time.

Greetings from Chesapeake, VA
I was wondering if you had any other comments regarding Banana Azul. We are planning our first trip to Costa Rica and have zeroed in on that location. After 4 trips to amazing Dominica we have finally seen it all there and now seek another eco destination. We are divers, but there was so much to do and see there we never did dive. Like you, we love to help out the local communities and for Christmas of 06 and 07 my boyfriend dressed up like Santa and we carried over 100 toys, books and school supplies to the children of the village of Calibishie- like 4 huge suitcases! We were fortunate enough to get a letter from the Minister of Tourism which enabled us to bypass customs in the airport!
Anyway, your blog caught my eye because of the school supplies that you brought there- so did you send a barrel ahead or take them in a suitcase? We are planning our trip now and will probably go in May or Sept/Oct- not sure now and we are so frustrated with our news here- nothing about the horrific earthquake!!
Thanks for any advice you can pass along. I know this trip was your second- is there any time of year that is better?? Please e-mail me! Becky

Pura Vida! I met Juppy in Puerto Viejo on my first trip in '98... Hung out at the Sunset Regae Bar and talked a few hours. Very interesting guy. Good to hear he's still there, I'm heading down this May. Maybe I'll catch him again.

PV has probably been our favorite stop. We have someone drive us down and come back to pick us up after a week or so (3 trips, so far). Other trips to the west Osa and Nicoya Penninsula's. Still beautiful, serene, and all but just doesn't have the same "cool" feel as Puerto Viejo. It's changed a lot since '98. They have an asphalt road now!

Hope you decide to go again!

It's probably in the interest of local business that these things aren't more openly discussed. They want people to keep coming downtown and spending money. (Not to mention conventions...) Melani, you're right, I think. If word gets out it will start costing the City money, and maybe they'll get after it more. There are lots of police around (I saw 3 cars last night), but they can't be everywhere and see everything. Still, sweeping it under the rug is not right.

And it's not just women. A male friend of a co-worker was mugged, oh, maybe a year ago, if the area.

Something I see a lot of is women walking around downtown in shoes/clothes they could not possibly run in. If you have to (or like to?) dress like that, at least consider changing into good walking shoes before heading to your car.

Linda thanks for your comments. I think we really need to get a map going. We can contact local businesses and Gaslamp organizations. If people are aware of what's going on then maybe these jerks will continue to be pushed out by the cops.

It looks like 'daylight savings time' is putting women at risk because it gets dark so much earlier and they're getting out from work at 5pm and walking to their cars in the dark at a higher risk to their safety. To me daylight savings time seems archane and unnecessary...
